Aggreko Assets

Overseeing and developing the world's leading temporary power supplier through digital transformation and product development.

Aggreko is the world's largest provider of temporary power solutions, managing a global fleet with more than 10 gigawatts of power capacity. The company operates in over 200 locations across 80 countries, employing more than 6,000 people, and has a presence on every continent.

Aggreko specializes in supplying short-term power to customers primarily in developed countries, while offering longer-term power projects in emerging markets. Its services cater to a variety of industries and events, including businesses, large-scale events, music festivals, sporting events, industrial facilities, and mining operations. The equipment available for hire includes gas and diesel generators, load banks, heaters, air conditioners, and chillers. In line with sustainability efforts, Aggreko also offers lower-emission solutions such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and solar-powered generators, as well as hybrid battery systems.

Over the years, Aggreko has powered numerous major sporting events, including the Ryder Cup, FIFA World Cup, Formula E races, and SailGP. In 2008, the company was the exclusive supplier of temporary power and temperature control for the Beijing Olympics. It also provided power for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the 2012 London Olympics, the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the 2017 WNBA Finals.

Challenge

Aggreko had an ambitious digital transformation effort for not only their own products and workflows but also their clients.

Starting out doing stakeholder and user interviews to identify common issues, workflows and 'wants' for the new platform. This helped us shape notonly what the product goals should be, but also what features to prioritise first as part of the products roadmap. This was invaluable to better understand the scope and complexity of the project and would be needed from both a design and development perspective.

Although no real competor products were available to carry out an anylasis we did carry out an extensive discovery design phase to see what modern application looked like to help inform the overall direction for the new design system we would be creating.

Solution

Starting out in the development phase of the project we carried out an extensive wireframing exercise to really explore the key work flows and establish the key UX patterns we would require. This helped us to rapidly create workable prototypes that could be put in front of users for testing. The feedback was then worked into what would become the final solution during the design phase where we started to really flesh out the design system and the library of components.

Additionally, we had the challenge of making the application fully responsive for onsite use as well as supporting both light and dark themes. As a result, we had to take tablets and mobile into consideration when building out the component library so we could insure a consistent experience across all devices.
